Managing a group to attain a goal is what management is all about. To accomplish the work successfully, a manager must identify the project's goals, divide it down into tasks, allocate duties, track individual and group progress, and control the scope of the project. Managers were correct in that they are not always good leaders. Strong leaders who maintain morale and motivation but aren't good managers (scope, task, and quality) don't deliver exceptional results, on the other side. That is why good managers and leaders should work together.
