Second-order thinking can be applied in two ways: 1. As a sheer mental challenge 2. You can jot it down on a piece of paper. Consider a choice you must make. Examine the decision's most immediate (first-order) consequences. Then ask yourself, "And then What?" for each effect. That is how you assess the second-order effects of your decisions. This exercise can be repeated as many times as you like for as many orders as you want.
